Master Your Practice: Why Your Pre-Shot Routine is Your Secret Weapon

Golf coach and student reviewing practice at an outdoor driving range.

Whether you are one of my students working hard on a swing change or a golfer looking to shave strokes off your scorecard, there is one universal truth in this game: Consistency on the golf course comes from a consistent process before the club ever touches the ball.

When we hit the driving range, we often focus entirely on the mechanics. We practice blocked training to embed a specific pattern—whether that is a new body motion, a unique feel, or a visual cue that helps us cultivate the perfect, compressed strike. But there is a massive piece of the puzzle that many golfers leave behind at the practice tee: the pre-shot routine.

To bridge the gap between the driving range and the golf course, you must commit to your routine before every single shot.

The Power of 3: Merging Technique with Routine

When you are working through your blocked practice, it is highly effective to lock in three specific motion feels before you execute a full swing. This builds a clear framework for what you want your body to achieve.

However, those feels shouldn’t exist in a vacuum. You need to wrap those rehearsal feels directly into your pre-shot routine. The same way you breathe, align, and commit to a shot on the 1st tee is exactly how you should practice on the range.

Your Challenge: Dedicate at least half an hour of your next practice session exclusively to practicing your full pre-shot routine. Treat every single range ball like it’s a shot for the club championship.

The Science of “Sensory Awareness”

Why does this matter so much? Because it creates a bridge between your mind and your muscles. When you slow down and deliberately run through your routine, your brain and body come into perfect agreement through sensory awareness.

By repeating the exact same sequence, you unlock incredible benefits:

  • Physical Alignment: The tendons and fibers in your body feel more accumulated, established, and ready to move.
  • Complete Connection: Every element of your game—your body, your brain, your vision, and even the sound of the strike—feels completely solidified and connected to the club.
  • Subconscious Execution: When you are highly deliberate with this training, the framework naturally transfers to your subconscious mind. Instead of overthinking your swing on the course, your routine takes over, naturally paving the way for the best golf shots of your life.

Be On Time, Every Time

Commitment to the process provides the results. By committing to your pre-shot routine during practice, you ensure that you are “on time” every single time you stand over the ball—equipped with the right feels, the right targets, and the right visuals.
