By Coach James Jordan
When you look at a great golfer, you aren't just looking at someone with a pretty swing. You are looking at a master architect of flight.
Over the last 15 years, my core coaching protocol at every single level—from enthusiastic beginners to elite touring professionals—has focused on shifting the narrative away from purely static positions. While body mechanics, physical conditioning, and physio-work are vital pieces of the puzzle, a beautiful swing on video means very little if you cannot control the golf ball, the trajectory, and the finish line out on the course.
If you want to build true, unshakeable confidence under pressure, you need to learn how to actively work on golf shots, not just golf swings.
Here is why shotmaking is the missing link in your development, and how we train it.
1. Decoding Intent: Starting Lines, Face Angles, and Baselines
Every great shot begins before the club ever moves. It starts with absolute clarity of intent. When we sit down or stand on the range together, the very first thing we map out is your starting line.
To hit a predictable shot pattern, your setup must align precisely with where you intend the ball to begin its journey. This requires an educated understanding of how three elements interact:
- The Target Line: Where you want the ball to ultimately land.
- The Clubface Direction: The absolute king of starting lines. Where that face points at impact dictates where the ball flies first.
- The Foot Line & Body Baselines: Your physical orientation.
To hit a draw, a fade, or a controlled cut, we have to dynamically shift your physical baselines and direction lines. If you don't understand how a slight change in your foot line or a subtle tweak in face angle alters the entire shape of the shot, you are just guessing in the dark. Working with a coach ensures your setup isn't accidentally fighting your artistic intention.
2. The Nine-Window Training Station
How do we take the theory of shotmaking and turn it into muscle memory and instinct? I utilize a specialized protocol called the Nine-Window Training Station.
Imagine a massive tic-tac-toe grid suspended out in space against the horizon. This grid represents nine distinct areas where a golf ball can travel:
| Shot shape | Low | Mid | High |
|---|---|---|---|
| Draw | Low Draw | Mid Draw | High Draw |
| Straight | Low Straight | Mid Straight | High Straight |
| Fade | Low Fade | Mid Fade | High Fade |
In our sessions, we systematically work through these windows. Can you intentionally flight a mid-trajectory cut? Can you keep a draw low under a simulated wind?
The magic of this training isn't just that it makes you versatile—it directly breeds confidence. When you stand over a ball on the 18th hole needing a high fade to hold a tight green, panic vanishes because your nervous system is intimately familiar with that exact window. You’ve hit that variation a hundred times with me on the tee.
3. The Balanced Practice Blueprint: The 50/50 Rule
If you want to see your hard work translate to a lower handicap, you cannot spend 100% of your time obsessing over technical swing changes.
You have to learn how to blend the mechanics with true playing artistry.
My mandate for all my players is to segment their practice with intention:
- 50% Mechanical & Physio: Dedicated to physical conditioning, body motion awareness, movement patterns, and drilling down the physics of your swing.
- 50% Active Shotmaking: Dedicated entirely to execution, target shifts, trajectory control, and rotating through the nine windows.
By segmenting at least half of your practice this way, you naturally blend the "how-to-swing" with the "how-to-play." If you are working with me, we build this framework together during our lessons. If you are practicing by yourself, you use that custom framework to keep your sessions disciplined and creative.
Step Up to the Ball with Purpose
Stop trying to hold static positions, and stop hitting the same straight 7-iron to the same target eighty times in a row. Become well-versed in the total game. Educate your hands, respect your starting lines, and open up your imagination to the full spectrum of ball flights.
Next time you are on the lesson tee, tell your coach you want to work on a specific shot pattern. Let's map out your baselines, target your windows, and transform you from a swing mechanic into a true shotmaker.
See you on the lesson Tee! ~ JJ
